Understanding Resistance Band "Weight"
Resistance bands do not have a fixed weight like a dumbbell. Instead, they providevariable resistance — the force increases as you stretch the band further. When a band is labeled "25-65 lbs," it means the band provides approximately 25 lbs of resistance at moderate stretch (about 1.5x its resting length) and 65 lbs at full stretch (about 2.5x).
This variable resistance is actually an advantage over fixed weights. Your muscles receive the most resistance at the point in the movement where they are strongest (fully contracted), and less resistance where they are weakest (fully stretched). This matches your natural strength curve better than a constant load.
Resistance Levels Explained
Most manufacturers use a tiered system, though the exact numbers vary by brand. Here is the TAICLET system with typical use cases for each level:
| Level | Resistance (lbs) | Color | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| X-Light | 5-15 lbs (2-7 kg) | Red | Rehab, warm-ups, seniors, children |
| Light | 15-25 lbs (7-11 kg) | Yellow | Beginners, upper-body isolation, Pilates |
| Medium | 25-45 lbs (11-20 kg) | Green | General fitness, intermediate strength |
| Heavy | 45-80 lbs (20-36 kg) | Blue | Advanced strength, pull-up assistance (light) |
| X-Heavy | 80-120 lbs (36-54 kg) | Black | Powerlifting accessory, heavy pull-up assist |
| XX-Heavy | 120-175 lbs (54-79 kg) | Purple | Deadlift/squat assist, heavy pull-ups |
Important: These are TAICLET's pull-up band specifications. Other brands may use different color-to-resistance mappings. Always check the actual resistance rating — do not rely on color alone.View our complete pull-up band range.
How to Choose by Exercise Type
Different exercises require different resistance levels. Here is a quick reference:
Upper Body (Arms, Shoulders, Chest)
Use light to medium bands (15-45 lbs). Upper body muscles are smaller and fatigue faster. Exercises: bicep curls, tricep extensions, shoulder presses, chest flyes, lateral raises, face pulls.
Lower Body (Glutes, Legs, Hips)
Use medium to heavy bands (25-80 lbs). Leg muscles are the strongest in the body and need more resistance. Exercises: squats, deadlifts, hip thrusts, lateral walks, leg presses. For glute activation withmini loop bands, start with medium resistance.
Pull-Up Assistance
Choose based on your bodyweight minus your pull-up strength. If you weigh 180 lbs and can almost do a pull-up, start with a light band (15-25 lbs). If you cannot get close, use a heavy band (45-80 lbs). The band compensates for the weight your muscles cannot yet lift.
Physical Therapy & Rehabilitation
Use x-light to light bands (5-25 lbs). Rehab exercises prioritize controlled, low-resistance movements. Patients recovering from surgery or injury need gentle, progressive loading. Latex-free TPE bands are strongly recommended for clinical settings.See our therapy band guide.
Yoga & Pilates
Use light to medium bands (15-45 lbs). Yoga and Pilates use bands for assisted stretching, flexibility work, and controlled resistance. Mini loop bands are most popular in this segment.See our yoga & Pilates guide.
Classroom & Sensory (Chair Bands)
Use x-light bands (5-15 lbs). Children need very light resistance for foot-bouncing and fidgeting. The goal is sensory input, not strength training.See our classroom chair bands.
Resistance Band Color Coding: Is It Standard?
Short answer: no. There is no universal color standard for resistance bands. The closest thing to an industry standard is the TheraBand clinical system (yellow = lightest, progressing through red, green, blue, black, silver, gold = heaviest), which is widely recognized in physical therapy settings.
Consumer brands use wildly different color schemes. Some follow a rainbow progression (red = light, purple = heavy). Others use custom brand colors that have nothing to do with resistance level. This is why it is critical for buyers and sellers to communicate in pounds or kilograms, not colors.
At TAICLET, we offer full custom color selection for OEM orders — you pick the Pantone color for each resistance level. We also print the resistance range directly on each band so end users never have to guess.Explore custom OEM options.
